DISCOVER THE HERITAGE OF MONTPELLIER

The city center's highlights

Montpellier is a city with an exceptional heritage, blending medieval history, classical elegance, and architectural modernity. The historic center, "l'Écusson," reveals a labyrinth of narrow streets, lively squares, and remarkable monuments. Strolling through these neighborhoods is like traveling through the centuries and soaking up the unique atmosphere of the South. From the Royal Hotel Montpellier, located in the heart of the city, all these highlights are within walking distance, for an easy and immersive discovery.

L'ARC DE TRIOMPHE

A monumental gateway to history

The Arc de Triomphe in Montpellier, built in 1662 by François d'Orbay at the request of Louis XIV, pays homage to the "Sun King." It marks the entrance to the historic center and majestically opens the Peyrou promenade. Adorned with bas-reliefs and engravings commemorating the great moments of his reign, it embodies the history and grandeur of the city. Listed as a historic monument since 1954, from its summit it offers a unique panorama of the Écusson, the Peyrou, the Aqueduct, and all the way to the sea.

For an unusual discovery, the Arc de Triomphe is accessible during guided tours, day or night, with the Montpellier Tourist Office !

THE PLACE OF COMEDY

The beating heart of the city

Nicknamed "the Egg" for its oval shape, Place de la Comédie is one of the largest pedestrian esplanades in Europe, bordered by the Opéra Comédie and majestic Haussmannian buildings. A meeting and convivial place, it's perfect for strolling, enjoying lunch on a terrace, or enjoying some shopping. At the center of the square is the famous Fountain of the Three Graces, a symbol of Montpellier and a must-see for locals and visitors alike.

Two minutes from the Royal Hotel, it's the ideal starting point for exploring the Écusson district and extending further afield via tram and bus lines.

THE MOGÈRE CASTLE

18th century estate

At the city gates, the Château de la Mogère illustrates the 18th-century French art of living, built by Jean Giral. This Montpellier “folly,” with its refined architecture and richly decorated salons—period furniture, paintings, statues, and historical portraits—offers a timeless interlude. Its park combines French and English gardens, with fountains, ponds, and a water feature listed as a historic monument. Visits are possible all year round.
