Open all year round
The Écusson district, the historic centre of Montpellier, a stone’s throw from the Royal Hôtel, is transformed every year at the end of November into a magical and enchanting place. The event includes a Christmas market with 150 sellers and artisans, a series of events and shows for the whole family, creating a benevolent bubble of festive cheer and great food in the heart of the city. Seize the chance to go on nice colourful strolls in the day or in the evening, as several night-time events are scheduled, allowing you to fully appreciate the light displays in the district.
Children are particularly spoiled during Les Hivernales de Montpellier. Storytellers recount legends and Christmas stories. Further on, workshops organise face painting, balloon modelling, origami and different games. The traditional merry-go-rounds are also part of the event, and often a Ferris wheel provides a fantastic view of the city. A skating rink lets you discover the joys of sledging and there is a nativity scene, harking back to a Provence tradition. Your kids will love it and all the family will have a brilliant time together.
Artisans and sellers present their best products in delightful little chalets.
Foodies can taste oysters, local wines (in moderation of course), honey, pastries, chocolate, gingerbread, candied fruit or sweets.
Further on, you will enjoy discovering the handicraft work of master Santon makers, ceramists, cutlers, jewellers, bag makers and accessories makers among others.
We booked a family room at the Royal Hôtel in Montpellier for a weekend to take advantage of all the entertainment at Les Hivernales, especially the Christmas market. We were able to discover lots of super-nice products and taste some super food and drink. And Arthur had lots of fun during our stay as he was able to take part in workshops with other children and attend all the activities and small shows. The atmosphere is really great and very family-oriented. And as the Royal Hôtel is very nearby, the night shows were within easy reach. A feast for the eyes guaranteed!
